44th CRI NE Assembly Convenes – A Nationwide Call to Mission

Guwahati, 30 August 2025 — A gathering of 115 participants representing 98 religious congregations from across Northeast India convened for the 44th Conference of Religious India Northeast (CRI NE) Assembly at the Social Forum in Guwahati. This three-day meeting, beginning today and culminating in the Pastoral Conference set to start on 1 September 2025, is dedicated to fostering collaboration in mission work.

The opening day highlighted the Pastoral Plan 2033 with its theme, "Empowerment of the Religious of Northeast as Missionary Disciples of Jesus for Mission Northeast 2033."

The Regional Deputy Secretary for the Bishops Council, Rev. Dr. GP Amalraj, inaugurated the assembly by unveiling the Pastoral Plan, noting that contributions have already been received from 13 dioceses in the region. He emphasized that achieving the outlined goals by 2033 necessitates collaboration among all the priests and religious. He extended blessings for the discussions to follow on behalf of the Northeast India Regional Bishops’ Council (NEIRBC).

In his opening remarks, Fr. Charles Leone, National Secretary for Vocations, Religious, Clergy, and Seminarians (VRCS), highlighted the significance of this year as it marks the centenary of Christ's first outreach to the Northeast. He inspired the religious leaders by recalling the song, "No Turning Back," noting its resonance with the local faith journey: "the cross before me…the cross behind me…" and the simple faith that has drawn many to

As the animation progressed, Fr. Charles posed a thought-provoking question regarding the icon of consecrated life (vita consecrata). A Sister from the Holy Cross Menzingen responded, identifying “the Transfigured Christ” as the essence of their vocation, rooted not in worldly symbols but in the illuminating presence of Christ.

Fr. Charles emphasized the need for the Church to cultivate “a passion for the mission, not just for the institutions.” When asked how to attract vocations, Trinitarian priest Fr. Jolly affirmed that the focus should be on attracting and inspiring vocations rather than merely promoting them. The animator agreeing to the response stressed that attracting vocations by personal accompaniment is the only way forward to find the disciples of Christ

The 44th CRI NE Assembly not a mere regional gathering; it serves as a national testament to the Catholic Church's commitment to spreading Christ’s message, says the CRI-NE Secretary Sr. Theresa who is conducting the programme for the first time after assuming office. The attendance of all provincials from major congregations, including the indigenous Mary Help of Christians (MSMHC) and Mother General Christiana, highlights the significance of this event.

This assembly marks the first under the leadership of new President Sr. Mabel Gotherp, FMA, Provincial of Guwahati, and Secretary Sr. Theresa Joseph, MSMHC.
